Rats carry diseases which can spread to humans, normally through its urine or body parts coming into contact with food preparation areas or other such areas in which humans carry out their daily lives. Rats can also cause structural damage, chewing through anything they can reach including cables and pipes.

Aside from hearing or seeing rats, faeces, gnawing marks on cables, woodwork etc. or smear marks (a greasy residue left when their fur rubs against walls) are also signs of a rat infestation. During warmer months they are more likely to be found outside amongst vegetation, and as the temperature drops they look to move inside buildings.

Rats are intelligent and can be difficult to control as they become wary of traps or new objects in their vicinity.
