Understanding Flies

There are multiple types of flies, each with their own preferred areas for breeding and infesting. The main ones you will probably face are the house fly, fruit fly and cluster fly.

They are all attracted to sources of food which is often fruit or rotting waste food. Therefore, the first step of any treatment is to ensure proper hygiene practices.

Cluster flies especially will look to enter homes as the weather cools (starting in Autumn) to hibernate where they will congregate, sometimes in their thousands, in areas of houses such as lofts. As they breed outside prior to entering homes, it is incredibly difficult to eradicate the problem in perpetuity, therfore cyclical treatment will be needed along with efforts to stop them breeding in the first place (ensuring good hygeine practices).

You will have probably noticed that fly populations increase dramatically during the summer months. This is because they are more active during the warmer weather and will breed outdoors, often in areas such as rubbish tips as these have waste food the flies can feed on.

Risks

Flies are one of the most common types of pests in the UK. They're almost constant presence means that they are more tolerated than other unwelcome guests. However, flies are not only a nuisance, they can also be a direct threat to human health.

Flies feed by vomiting saliva onto food and sucking up the resulting liquid, thus contaminating the food (along with via the bacteria it brings on its feet and landing on the food). This can cause various health problems for humans.

They are also a risk as they frequent areas that are unhygienic (where excrement and other foul substances are present). This increases the risk of transmitting diseases and illnesses when they land on surfaces used by humans or on food intended for human consumption.

Some flies also bite which can cause irritation. Aside from being annoying and disrupting sleep, it is also tempting to itch the bites which can lead to infection.

Treatment

Any treatment should begin with addressing the source of the problem to improve long term results. Ensure any waste food is disposed of appropriately, and any perishable foods such as fruit are stored securely. Looking for cracks and crevices in buildings can also help to reduce the chances of flies such as the cluster fly infesting your home.

Our range of products below can then provide direct relief. An overview of the different forms and their advantages is below. For the most effective results, a combination of the sprays, foggers, powders and traps should be used.

Spray, Powder, Fogger or Trap?

Spray Sprays are effective when targeting flies directly. With an instant knock-down effect, the flies will be killed almost instantly, allowing for easy disposal.

Powders Our Desi-Dust powder can be applied to areas to stop flies from breeding. It reduces the moisture content of an area meaning some types of flies cannot lay their eggs.

Traps These are a great option for keeping fly populations down in areas where you frequent. They can be left to catch the flies on their own due to being laced with fly attractants. They are especially good for outdoor areas or garages/stables where large numbers of flies are present and spraying them individually is impractical.

Foggers Foggers are a great option for killing flies when the infected area is enclosed (such as a room or garage). They fill the room with chemicals that kill off the flies, even in hard to reach places that can't be reached by powders or sprays such as cracks and crevices. Caution should be taken as the chemicals will also kill any other species of insect in the area as well. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
