What Are Moths?

There are thousands of different types of moths in the UK. Although most are harmless and pose no direct risk to humans, some can be a real nuisance as they damage clothes and other fabrics such as carpets. No one wants to retrieve their best suit from the wardrobe to find only half of it remains.

If nothing else, addressing a moth infestation at the earliest convenience is cost-effective as it will reduce the damage they can inflict on your property. Even more so if the items at risk are of intrinsic value.

Moth populations are reducing in the UK. Given the majority of these species are harmless, it's important that you properly identify it to ensure that it's necessary to eradicate them. The most common types that are considered pests are: the Common Clothes Moth, the Indian-Meal Moth and the White-Shouldered House Moth. We will explore how to identify these species in our blog. Some cause damage to clothing and fabrics, whereas others will raid your cupboards for food.

Identifying An Infestation

Moths aren't particularly difficult to spot as they can fly around an infected area. However, if they have infested a wardrobe or cupboard, you may not see them until the damage has already been done. Checking these areas regularly to ensure there is no damage to property, eggs or trails from the moths is an effective way of identifying their presence early.

Although they prefer warmer weather, moths can be a problem all year round so regular checks are essential to keeping them at bay.

Treatment

Treatment should start with ensuring good hygiene practices (throwing out infected food, ensuring there isn't easy access for moths to enter your home etc.). We will explore other practices in our blog. To address them directly, our range of foggers, powders and sprays can be used. Given infestations can be around food and clothes, you should always read the manufacturers label (available on the product pages) to ensure the product is suitable for your situation.

Spray, Powder or Fogger?

Spray Sprays are effective when targeting moths directly. With an instant knock-down effect, the moths will be killed almost instantly, allowing for easy disposal.

Powders Powders are a good choice when there is a larger infected area, making spraying the moths individually impractical, and there is less risk of affecting non-target species.

Foggers Foggers are a great option for killing moths when the infected area is enclosed (such as a room or garage). They fill the room with chemicals that kill off the moths, even in hard to reach places that can't be reached by powders or sprays such as cracks and crevices. Caution should be taken as the chemicals will also kill any other species of insect in the area as well. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
