Shop: Red Mite Killer Products

Red Mites and Red Spider Mites are 2 separate species, each with their own problems. We have a range of sprays, powders and foggers that can be used to get rid of both of these pests as well as ensure they don't return anytime soon. Our Insecto range contains professional strength insecticide available for amateur use, whilst our Organ-X and Ecofective range provide a great pesticide free alternative.

Red Spider Mites

These are less than 1mm big and for the majority of the year, the 'red' spider mites are a green-ish colour and live outside. However, by Autumn they turn bright red and can enter homes to hibernate for winter. They can also look to hibernate in cracks and crevices of garden walls.

They can be evidenced on plants (especially in green houses) as they leave cobwebby type strings on stems and leaves (hence the name 'spider' mite). They feed on the juices of plants and group on the underside of leaves. The plants may also look malnourished and can die.

Red spider mites prefer warm and dry conditions so will most likely be active in the spring and summer months. However, if you have a greenhouse, the warmer conditions can extend their activity periods. If left unchecked, they can wreak havoc on plants and if they experience warmer temperatures year round, they can breed all year round.

Red Mites (Poultry)

Red poultry mites infest chicken coops, feeding on the blood of the birds causing distress and complications with the animal's health and wellbeing. It can also lead to behaviours such as aggression and feather pecking.

They tend to only feed on the birds at night so they can be hard to detect when inspecting the chickens. Behaviours such as aggression and feather picking can suggest red mites are present. They also prefer warmer conditions so extra vigilance should be applied during the summer months. Checking cracks and crevices early in the morning, after they have fed on the chickens, is often the best time as they will have their deep red colour.

They live in the crack and crevices of hen houses (or any dark areas that are sheltered and out of sun light). This is where they spend their time during the day, and lay their eggs. They can live for 9 months without food, so getting rid of them requires more than just a waiting game.

Our sprays and powders below can eradicate these pests. We also recommend using Desi-Dust alongside sprays and powders which dehydrates the mites & their habitats and naturally prevents them from reproducing.

Spray, Powder or Fogger?

Spray Sprays are effective when targeting the mites directly. With an instant knock-down effect, the mites will be killed almost instantly, allowing for easy disposal. They are good when the infestations can be accessed easily (including the nesting grounds) or for red spider mites on plants.

Powders Powders are a good choice when there is a larger infected area, making spraying the spiders individually impractical, and there is less risk of affecting non-target species. They are also good when there is a larger nesting site, especially for red mites (poultry). Desi-Dust can be used alongside other products as a two-pronged approach.

Foggers Foggers are a great option for killing mites when the infected area is enclosed (such as a room or garage). They fill the room with chemicals that kill off the mites, even in hard to reach places that can't be reached by powders or sprays such as cracks and crevices. Caution should be taken as the chemicals will also kill any other species of insect in the area as well. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
