Traps

When looking at DIY pest control for rodent infestations, trapping can prove an effective resolution, especially if there are only 1 or 2 unwanted guests. Results can be achieved quickly without many of the risks associated with using rodenticides, however if you are facing a larger mouse or rat infestation, poisons may be more appropriate. For more information on this method, please see our blog post.

Type of Traps

We supply a range of traditional and modern mice and rat catchers below. Each have their own advantages and requirements for effectiveness. We have provided some brief guidance below, but please see our blog for further information.

How to Trap Rats & Mice

Getting rid of mice and rats will inevitably require some trial and error and using traps is no different as different circumstances require different applications. However, below are three key tips for using traps effectively that can be applied to any scenario. For further information, please visit our blog.

Snap trap The 'traditional' and often seen as the best trap. It works by triggering a spring loaded arm once the bait is taken. It's essential to make sure the components, especially the spring, is of good quality so that it kills the rat or mouse instantly. Often more effective where there is a lack of an alternative food source for the rodent. We supply wooden, metal and plastic snap traps below, each manufactured with the highest quality components. Rat traps are larger than mouse traps - it's important to pick the right size, depending on your target, to ensure effective results.

Bait Each rat and mouse catcher requires bait (not poisons) to entice rodents onto them. Neither rats nor mice are particularly fussy, so a range of household items will work, however we always recommend peanut butter or chocolate as they are attracted to calorie/fat foods!

Electronic Trap A new form of trapping includes electric traps. This is a battery powered device with a hole large enough for a rat to enter (disguised as shelter). Once inside, the trap will electrocute the rat, killing it instantly and humanely. The dead rodent is then stored in a compartment within the trap so that it can be disposed of easily, without the user ever having to touch the dead rat.

Location Placing traps in the correct locations is crucial. Requirements for mice and rats differ (catching mice is slightly easier), however generally the traps should be placed on the pathways between where the rodents nest and where they eat/search for food. Try to pick areas along these pathways that are in sheltered areas (near walls, under shrubbery or sheds, behind cupboards etc.) where there are sign of rodent activity such as rat or mouse droppings, gnawing marks or grease.

Live Capture Live capture traps for mice have become popular in recent years as they catch mice without killing them. It is kept alive so the user can release the mouse in an area where they will no longer be a nuisance. This can make them a more humane trap. Although they get rid of mice without killing them, these do require regular monitoring to ensure the captured mice are not trapped for too long and suffer unnecessary distress.

Patience You need patience to get rid of rats and mice. These rodents are naturally suspicious and may avoid new objects in their environment to begin with, so give it time before moving the traps. Check them regularly to replenish the bait and, if needed, use multiple traps simultaneously.
